Iran claims it faces full-scale war with US as conflict spreads

Iran declared on Monday that it is embroiled in a "full-scale war" with the United States, as American airstrikes have broadened to target the center and east of the Islamic republic. The conflict has escalated across the Middle East, with Iranian attacks on Gulf nations and blockades of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is currently in a "full-scale war" following the ninth consecutive night of U.S. bombings. These latest strikes resulted in one death and several injuries in Tabriz, over 1,000 kilometers from the Gulf. U.S. airstrikes have extended into central and eastern Iran, moving beyond the southern regions where initial attacks occurred after hostilities resumed on July 7.

While the United States claims its operations target military objectives, Iran accuses Washington of striking civilian areas. Bushehr, home to Iran's sole operational nuclear power plant, and the under-construction Darkhovin plant were reportedly hit. President Trump warned Iran would face severe repercussions for any American casualties, following the deaths of three U.S. soldiers recently. In total, 17 American soldiers have died since the conflict began on February 28. Iran's official toll reported 50 deaths and over 500 injuries since early July.

A peace negotiation agreement signed on June 17 between Iran and the U.S. became void after hostilities resumed. In retaliation, Tehran launched new attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain, U.S. allies, while also stating it is engaged in talks with the U.S. through mediators. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed diplomatic efforts are ongoing, and the interior minister was scheduled to visit Pakistan, a mediator country.
