Iran conflict: US actions continue, Trump again threatens Iran with destruction

Military confrontations between the United States and Iran persist in the Persian Gulf, even after the two nations signed a peace memorandum last week. In the latest escalation, the U.S. stated that Iran launched an attack drone which struck the M/T Kiku, a commercial vessel sailing under the Panamanian flag, on Saturday. The tanker was carrying over two million barrels of crude oil near the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to what it termed Iran's "continuous aggressions against commercial shipping," the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) conducted strikes against Iranian targets. These actions included attacks on Iran's military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage, and mine-laying capabilities, according to a Centcom statement. The U.S. had previously stated it gave Iran a chance to respect a ceasefire agreement, which it claims Iran did not do.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard responded by announcing its forces had launched a joint missile and drone attack on U.S. military targets in Kuwait and Bahrain. The Guard stated that violating the ceasefire goes against the first clause of the Islamabad memorandum and would lead to a complete halt of all diplomatic processes. A U.S. official later told Reuters that the recent Iranian strikes did not cause significant damage or casualties among U.S. troops.
