Iran counters Trump, says Hormuz Strait to remain blocked until conditions met

Iran has asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will remain blocked unless its conditions are met, directly challenging recent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that the United States has complete control over the vital waterway.

"The Strait of Hormuz remains blocked and will only be reopened when Iran's conditions are met," stated an official announcement. This comes after Trump repeatedly claimed U.S. dominance, stating, "It belongs to us. They (Iranians) have no control whatsoever." He further threatened, "At some point, the Iranians might do something, and then they will be wiped out."

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) recently reported that attacks and threats by Iran's Revolutionary Guard in the strait are ongoing. These actions suggest Iran's intent to maintain its presence along key transit routes and exert pressure on passing ships. The risk of drifting or unmarked mines also persists, forcing commercial vessels to navigate with reduced capacity.

The dispute over transit rights in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil, gas, and fertilizer transport, is considered a primary cause for the escalation of military conflict between Washington and Tehran. Shipping traffic through the strait had been nearly unimpeded before U.S. and Israeli attacks against Iran began on February 28. Following the start of the war, Iran's actions, including attacks on and threats to ships, have effectively halted maritime traffic. This has led to a surge in oil and gas prices, triggering a global inflationary spiral.
