Iran Fires Drones and Missiles in Response to U.S. Strikes

Iran launched missiles and drones in response to new U.S. strikes, Iranian media reported, reigniting hostilities after a month without military action.

The Fars and Tasnim news agencies, which are viewed as close to Iran's security forces, reported the operations late in the day. Hours earlier, the U.S. military said it had attacked new targets in Iran over recent attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The renewed fighting came after what appeared to be a change in Donald Trump's position, with the U.S. president having indicated that he would focus on economic sanctions against Iran.

Trump called the latest attack "justified" and threatened larger strikes if Tehran responded. In a post on Truth Social, he said U.S. forces had attacked Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz in response to an alleged failed attempt to place naval mines in the waterway and to the launch of eight missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan. In a phone interview with Fox News, Trump said the strikes largely targeted Iranian efforts to rebuild radar destroyed in earlier U.S.-Israeli attacks during the six-month conflict. He said the U.S. military had monitored the rebuilding effort and waited until it was nearly complete before striking.

Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was ready to return to a ceasefire agreement reached with the United States in June if Washington was prepared to comply with its terms. But Trump appeared to reject a near-term return to the truce. According to a Fox News reporter who spoke with him, Trump said, "The agreement with them isn't worth the paper it's written on."
