Iran Issues Demands for Strait of Hormuz Reopening, Complicating Talks

Iran has issued a comprehensive set of demands that it insists the United States must meet before the critical Strait of Hormuz can be reopened to global shipping. The requirements, laid out by Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, were broadcast via state media on Saturday, casting uncertainty over the vital trade waterway.

Zolghadr's list calls for the U.S. to end its naval blockade and sanctions against Iran, withdraw its military forces from the region, and pay reparations for alleged damages. Iran also demands the release of its frozen assets and an end to threats and attacks against its regional allies. These conditions significantly complicate the situation, especially following a previous ceasefire agreement in June that linked sanctions relief to a final deal on Iran's nuclear program.

Previous U.S. statements indicated that Iran could access frozen funds only after committing to abandon its enriched uranium. Zolghadr's demands appear to override these expectations and could put pressure on President Donald Trump. Lowering consumer energy prices is a key concern for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections, and Iran's conditions present a potential dilemma.

The situation is further complicated by ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had previously closed the strait in response to attacks by the U.S. and Israel in February. The demands issued by Zolghadr have disrupted hopes that an agreement with Oman would soon restore commerce and stabilize global energy prices.

The Americans were seeking to establish new routes through the Strait of Hormuz, and despite the warnings issued by our country, they sought to undermine Iran’s management of the strait. Therefore, any violation of the memorandum of understanding or of Iran’s management of the Strait of Hormuz is absolutely unacceptable to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
