Iran Launches Missiles, Drones at Kurdish Opposition Bases in Iraqi Kurdistan

Iran launched missiles and drones against bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the province of Erbil, located in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. The attacks, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly did not result in any casualties, according to the Kurdish media outlet Rudaw.

A commander from the local 'peshmerga' forces told Rudaw that Iran fired "several missiles and drones" at positions belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Alana Valley, approximately 90 kilometers northeast of Erbil, the regional capital. Rudaw reported that two drones crashed in an unpopulated area, while a third drone struck a residential house in the Soran district.

Tehran designates Kurdish organizations such as Komala and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan as terrorist groups. These organizations oppose the Islamic Republic and have had their facilities in Iraq bombed by Iran on multiple occasions since the start of the war in Iran on February 28. The Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraqi Kurdistan have accused Tehran of attacking their bases.

Iran has demanded that Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government disarm or expel these groups, alleging they pose a security threat to the Islamic Republic. In April, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his country had sent weapons to Iranian Kurds for use during anti-government protests in Iran in January, but claimed these weapons never reached the protesters.
