Iran's interior minister visits Pakistan amid escalating US tensions

Iran's Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, arrived in Pakistan on Monday leading a high-level delegation, at a time when Islamabad is seeking a diplomatic path to de-escalate hostilities following increased tensions between Washington and Tehran.

"I hope that the Iranian Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, has brought good news... I also hope for progress in the regional situation," stated his Pakistani counterpart, Mohsin Naqvi, upon receiving the delegation at the airport. During his two-day stay, Momeni is scheduled to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir. While the agenda for these meetings remains undisclosed, both Sharif and Munir have played key roles in the mediation efforts that led to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in mid-June.

The Iranian delegation includes high-ranking officials such as the governor-general of Sistan and Baluchistan, the deputy interior minister, the deputy minister of Urban Development and Transport, the director of the National Iranian Oil Company, and the special representative of the Minister of Agriculture, according to a statement from the Pakistani government.

Iran announced on Monday that several mediators have conveyed new proposals and initiatives to prevent further escalation of tensions with the United States. This comes after nine consecutive days of crossfire, following Washington's termination of the peace memorandum of understanding due to Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
