Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's de facto supreme leader, has remained out of public sight for more than five months, fueling intense speculation about his health and whereabouts. He ascended to the leadership on March 9 following an alleged US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran that killed his father, former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, along with other family members. Mojtaba himself reportedly sustained severe, disfiguring facial injuries and significant leg damage in the attack.

His absence has been conspicuous. Mojtaba did not appear publicly after his appointment, a situation partly explained by ongoing US and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian leadership. However, he has not released any recorded video or audio messages. A state television presenter read a statement attributed to him, accompanied by a static photograph. He also missed his father's funeral on July 4, with the regime citing "security reasons," and broke a 30-year tradition by not delivering a televised New Year's address on March 20.

Intelligence sources offer varying theories on his condition. One former Mossad official suggests it is "highly questionable" whether Mojtaba is still alive or fully functional, pointing to his absence from his father's funeral as a significant deviation from Shiite tradition. US sources believe that if alive, he is in a highly secure, likely underground, location. Meanwhile, Western security sources indicate that despite sustained bombings, intelligence services are still operating on limited information regarding his status.
