Iran's Leader Urges Domestic Production, Reduced Dollar Reliance

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has identified increased reliance on domestic production as the crucial solution to the country's economic woes. Speaking on Friday, August 28, 2026, Khamenei urged the government to prioritize economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and price controls.

Khamenei stressed that fostering economic growth, boosting investment in beneficial sectors, and prioritizing "resistance economy" policies are essential. "The main key to resolving all these problems lies in increasing reliance on domestic production," he stated, emphasizing the need to ensure adequate supplies of essential and specialized goods. He added that imports should be used judiciously only when domestic production falls short.

The leader also called for the adoption of technologies and innovations proposed by Iran's young elite. He believes timely implementation in sectors like agriculture, industry, and education can drive significant progress. Khamenei suggested that smarter management and greater involvement of specialists could propel Iran toward economic expansion.

His remarks come as the Iranian rial has hit record lows against the US dollar, surpassing 2 million rials per dollar amid new US sanctions. Khamenei praised the government's efforts during wartime to provide essential goods and services and manage energy supplies under strict sanctions and blockades.
