Iran’s president says Tehran will reciprocate if US honours interim deal commitments

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran would respond immediately if the United States returns to its commitments under an interim agreement, offering a conditional opening after fresh attacks between the two countries.

Pezeshkian made the statement at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, following the first direct exchange of attacks in the US-Iran conflict since late July. The United States struck Larak Island, after which Iran attacked two US air bases in Jordan.

“I am stating clearly that if the US returns to its commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by Iranian state media. He referred to the interim deal signed in June as part of efforts to end the war, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

The agreement quickly broke down amid disputes over how it should be implemented. Tehran has repeatedly said it will permit free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz only if Washington carries out the deal’s terms. The waterway is vital to global oil supplies.

Pezeshkian said in Bishkek on Monday that war served no one’s interests and that Iran remained open to a negotiated solution with Washington. US President Donald Trump said “there will be a response” after Iran’s attacks, but later told reporters in the Oval Office that the renewed strikes did not mark a return to full-scale war.
