Iran threatens 'act of war' over looming U.S. sanctions, pressures Hormuz Strait

Iran has issued a stern warning against impending U.S. economic sanctions, with a top security official declaring that any country supporting the measures will be considered an "act of war." This escalation follows President Donald Trump's assertion that Iran is "collapsing."

Tehran's strong reaction comes as the U.S. Treasury Secretary is expected to announce expanded sanctions today. The potential impact on Middle Eastern oil supplies has already caused crude prices to dip by more than a dollar per barrel. The situation is particularly tense around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transport.

Iranian officials have reiterated their conditions for reopening the strait, including the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, the withdrawal of American forces, and reparations for war damages. Meanwhile, Tehran has also pursued separate talks with Oman to jointly manage navigation through the strait, irrespective of a new agreement with Washington.

In recent days, Iran has intensified its pressure on the maritime passage, threatening to halt all oil exports from the Gulf if the "economic war" continues. Iran has also issued a new warning to vessels, demanding authorization before transiting the Strait of Hormuz and listing 45 ships it claims have violated its regulations, threatening retaliation for any complicity with the United States.
