Iran ties Hormuz reopening to US concessions on demands

Iran announced it is in the final stages of an agreement with Oman to establish new shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas transport. However, Tehran reiterated its stance that the strategic waterway will only be reopened after the United States meets several conditions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the deal with Oman is nearing completion but emphasized that Iran's reopening of the strait is contingent upon the U.S. fulfilling demands. These demands, as outlined by the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Body, Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, include compensation for damages from U.S. and Israeli attacks, an end to U.S. military threats, the lifting of sanctions, and the removal of a U.S. naval blockade in the Gulf.

A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that Iran and Oman were close to a deal that could restore safe passage through the strait. The official indicated that the U.S. would lift its blockade on Iranian ports once Iran fulfills its commitments under the agreement. This suggests a delicate sequencing toward a potential resolution, with U.S. actions tied to Iran's implementation of its obligations.

U.S. President Donald Trump, in a separate interview, described the U.S. approach to Iran as "low-keying it," noting Iran's economic struggles.
