Iran War Spreads to Red Sea and Caspian as Gulf Tensions Simmer

The conflict involving Iran has broadened significantly over the weekend, extending to the Red Sea and the Caspian Sea, despite a pause in U.S. strikes. Yemen's Houthi rebels, aligned with Iran, launched attacks on Saudi oil installations along the Red Sea coast. Simultaneously, Iran accused Ukraine of targeting one of its vessels in the Caspian Sea, resulting in casualties.

The U.S. military confirmed its naval blockade against Iran remains active but offered no explanation for halting a series of 13 consecutive nights of escalating strikes. A senior official in the Trump administration suggested the President prefers diplomacy but has demonstrated the consequences of Iran's non-compliance. Reports indicate President Trump is reconsidering plans to intensify attacks due to concerns about escalating the conflict, depleting defense stockpiles, alienating Middle East allies, and impacting global energy supplies and the economy.

Concerns about U.S. munitions stockpiles were reportedly raised with President Trump during a White House meeting. Operations are currently "on hold," according to a Department of Defense source. This pause comes despite ongoing Iranian missile displays in Tehran.

The Houthi attacks on Saudi state oil company Aramco facilities in Jizan and Yanbu highlight the potential disruption to a second major shipping route, in addition to the Strait of Hormuz. Video evidence suggests a large column of smoke emanated from the Aramco refinery in Jizan, which has a capacity of 400,000 barrels per day. Trading sources indicated potential damage to fuel and oil storage sites in Jizan, though Aramco did not respond to requests for comment. Two missiles aimed at oil installations in Yanbu were intercepted.

In the Caspian Sea incident, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires to protest what it called a "hostile and criminal" attack that killed one sailor and injured another. This accusation coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's remarks about Russia sharing satellite observations in the Middle East with Iran, potentially enabling targeted strikes.
