Iranian politician urges pre-emptive strikes on US targets

Mahmoud Nabavian says the time has come for Iran to strike US targets in the Persian Gulf. The influential hard-line lawmaker argued that Washington is trying to reduce tensions because its ammunition reserves are running low, fuel prices are rising and US congressional elections are approaching.

“Now is the best time to launch a pre-emptive strike against US facilities in the region, force the enemy to retreat and end the blockade,” Nabavian wrote in a post on X. He added that Iran’s national interests would suffer if the country failed to seize the opportunity.

Nabavian is regarded as an influential figure among Iran’s fundamentalists, who remain skeptical of negotiations with the United States and favor confrontation. His comments came after military tensions in the Persian Gulf intensified over the weekend, with the two countries carrying out reciprocal attacks for the first time in about a month.

The US-Iran conflict has reached an impasse six months after it began. US President Donald Trump recently declared “economic war” on Tehran, while his administration promised sanctions against countries that continue doing business with Iran. The pressure seeks to push Tehran toward an agreement, but hard-line voices in Iran are calling instead for escalation.
