Iraq, Kuwait vow to counter discord, reopen border crossing

Kuwaiti Interior Minister Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah asserted on Saturday that Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations are "deep-rooted" and resilient to challenges. Speaking during a visit to Iraq's Basra province, he pledged to confront any "attempts to sow discord" between the two nations.

Al-Sabah's remarks followed security incidents and rising tensions along the border, which had raised concerns about bilateral cooperation. At a joint news conference with Basra Governor Asaad al-Eidani at the Safwan border crossing, the minister stated that relations were "firmly established, regardless of the challenges." He added that reciprocal official visits would continue, emphasizing a "deeply rooted brotherhood" that transcends mere friendship.

Governor Eidani echoed the sentiment, viewing the visit as a message of brotherhood between Iraq and Gulf states. He acknowledged "complex security conditions" and "irresponsible actions" that might occur but insisted they did not reflect the true nature of relations. Eidani stated that fraternal ties and government coordination were sufficient to contain incidents and safeguard regional security and stability.
