Iraq launches investigation into drone attack on Saudi Arabia allegedly launched from its territory

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has launched an investigation into a drone attack that targeted Saudi Arabia, following accusations from Riyadh that the assault was launched from Iraqi territory. The Saudi Defense Ministry claimed the drones were aimed at oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh.

Al-Zaidi directed security authorities to probe the Saudi declaration, emphasizing Iraq's commitment to good neighborly principles. "The government is examining the available evidence and information and will take legal action against those found involved in such acts, in accordance with the investigation's findings," stated the Prime Minister's office. Iraq reiterated its dedication to ensuring its territory is not used as a base for attacks against friendly nations.

This incident follows a similar accusation in April, when Saudi Arabia summoned the Iraqi ambassador after drone attacks were launched from Iraqi territory against Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Saudi Arabia has urged Iraq to take all necessary measures to prevent such attacks.

Iraq hosts numerous pro-Iranian Shiite militias, some of which operate independently and have been implicated in attacks across the Persian Gulf region. Despite being integrated into Iraqi armed forces, these groups have acted in favor of Iranian interests. Baghdad faces pressure from the United States to disarm these militias, a process that has stalled.
