Ireland issues new visa guidelines for international students

International students aspiring to study in Ireland for longer than three months must now secure a long-term study visa before their departure, according to updated guidance from Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery (ISD).

Applications can be submitted up to three months before the intended travel date. The application process begins by completing an online form through Ireland’s Automated Visa Application and Tracking System.

Non-European Economic Area nationals intending to pursue courses exceeding 90 days are required to apply for this visa from their home country or a nation where they hold legal residency. The application process can be initiated up to three months prior to the planned travel date. It involves completing an online form, printing and signing the summary, paying the requisite fee, and submitting a comprehensive set of supporting documents.

Essential documentation includes a valid passport, recent photographs, private medical insurance, an acceptance letter from an educational institution, proof of tuition fee payment, academic records, and evidence of language proficiency if necessary. Crucially, students must demonstrate they possess sufficient funds to cover their living expenses throughout their stay in Ireland. Applicants are also obligated to disclose any prior visa refusals.

Applicants must then print, sign and date the application summary form, pay the required visa fee where applicable, and submit supporting documents.

The ISD emphasizes that incomplete applications risk refusal, and the provision of false information may lead to a visa denial and a potential five-year ban from obtaining an Irish visa. While visa applications are processed in the order they are received, immigration officers reserve the right to request additional information. Students are strongly advised against making any travel arrangements until their visa application has been officially approved. Furthermore, possessing a visa does not guarantee entry; students must still satisfy immigration officials upon arrival.
