Ireland's busiest rail corridor to be expanded from two to four tracks

Ireland's busiest rail corridor, connecting Dublin Connolly and Malahide, is set for a major upgrade. Iarnród Éireann has announced the "FourNorth" project, which will expand the line from two tracks to four. This significant infrastructure program, costing hundreds of millions of euros, aims to address a long-standing bottleneck that causes delays across the wider rail network during peak times.

The primary goal of FourNorth is to boost capacity and allow for more trains to operate on the route. This enhancement is expected to improve overall timetable performance and lead to more frequent services. The project also seeks to strengthen connections between North Dublin, Meath, Louth, and Belfast, fostering better regional connectivity.

Funding for this ambitious project comes jointly from Ireland's Department of Transport and the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility Transport program. Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Mary Considine emphasized the project's broader vision, stating, "FourNorth is about more than new tracks. It is about building a resilient, high-capacity rail corridor that supports everyday journeys, strengthens regional connections and helps deliver a sustainable transport future for Ireland - making space today for the needs of tomorrow."

Further details on the project's exact route will be revealed after a public consultation later this year. This consultation will offer communities, passengers, businesses, and local authorities a chance to influence the design. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien highlighted ongoing investments in the Northern Line, including passing loops and turnback facilities at Mosney, Skerries, Malahide, and Clongriffin, which will also improve journey times and reliability for Enterprise and DART passengers.
