Ireland to be Guest Country at La Mar de Músicas Festival in 2027

Ireland will be the guest country at the 32nd edition of the La Mar de Músicas festival in Cartagena, Spain, scheduled for July 2027. The announcement came during the closing ceremony of the 2026 festival, which celebrated Ecuador as its guest nation. "Let's say goodbye, with gratitude, to Ecuador (guest country this 2026), and let's welcome Ireland, as the guest country for La Mar de Músicas 2027," stated the festival organizers. Following dedications to Ecuador and South Korea in previous years, the festival sought to return its focus to Europe while maintaining its mission to discover new cultures. Festival director Eugenio González explained that Ireland perfectly embodies the balance between identity and modernity that La Mar de Músicas seeks. He described Ireland as a country proud of its roots yet capable of reinventing and projecting them globally. Cartagena Mayor Noelia Arroyo highlighted Ireland's historical association with traditional music, folk, and iconic bands like U2 and The Cranberries. However, she noted a new generation of artists has transformed the country into a stimulating creative hub in Europe, where tradition has evolved rather than disappeared. Arroyo added that Irish culture, including literature, cinema, and visual arts, is currently leading, demonstrating how a small nation can exert significant cultural influence. The festival aims to showcase how Irish music has never stood still, with new generations reinterpreting ancient melodies, incorporating new instruments, and engaging with global sounds. This results in a diverse, open, and contemporary scene that aligns with La Mar de Músicas' philosophy of celebrating living tradition.
