Ireland Wins R&A Trophy at Home Internationals Golf Tournament

Ireland clinched the prestigious R&A Trophy at the Home Internationals golf tournament, a combined championship for men and women, held at the historic Woodbrook Golf Club. The victory came after a closely contested final day where the overall winner remained undecided until the conclusion of the singles matches.

The foursomes matches between Ireland and England concluded in a tie, setting the stage for a dramatic showdown in the afternoon singles. In one notable foursomes match, Irish player Kate Dillon's tee shot on the 17th hole came agonizingly close to a hole-in-one, ultimately resulting in a halved point for her pairing. This crucial half-point, along with a win from Emma Fleming and Anna Abom, meant the women's foursomes ended at 1½ to 1½, keeping the R&A Trophy – awarded for the combined men's and women's performance – very much up for grabs.

The tournament, held during Woodbrook Golf Club's centenary year, offered a throwback to a more traditional style of golf. While Ireland ultimately claimed the combined R&A Trophy, England secured victories in both the men's and women's individual categories, taking the Raymond Trophy for the men and the Hugh C Kelly Trophy and International Shield for the women. The competition, which also featured the International Shield for women, culminated with the destinations of the silverware being decided as the evening shadows lengthened.
