Irish Foreign Minister to Discuss Gulf Stability Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee is embarking on a visit to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, with a primary focus on fostering stability in the Gulf region. The trip is intended to underscore Ireland's solidarity with Gulf nations that have been directly affected by the recent Strait of Hormuz crisis and ongoing tensions involving Iran.

Our gulf partners have been directly impacted by the conflict and have demonstrated commendable restraint in the face of Iranian attacks.

McEntee stated that the visit aims to discuss ways to enhance stability among neighboring nations. She noted that Ireland's Gulf partners have shown "commendable restraint" despite Iranian attacks. "We hope that the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran can lead to a lasting agreement that addresses the main issues at stake, including Iran's nuclear programme, and fully restores free movement through the Strait of Hormuz," she said.

The minister views her visit as an opportunity to demonstrate Ireland's commitment and explore how Ireland and the European Union can contribute to peace efforts. She also plans to discuss the broader regional conflicts, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with her counterparts in the Gulf states.

Beyond security and stability, the visit will also emphasize economic ties between Ireland and the region, particularly during Ireland's current EU presidency. McEntee will also engage with Irish communities and meet with women in Saudi Arabia, including university graduates and aviation professionals, to gain their perspectives on the country's social and economic transformation.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are also actively engaged in efforts to secure peace in the wider region, including in relation to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, and I look forward to discussing these issues with my counterparts.
