Irish Oscar Winner Glen Hansard Dies in Motorcycle Accident

Glen Hansard, the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actor, has died at the age of 56. Hansard tragically lost his life after a motorcycle accident on a road in southwest Dublin early Wednesday morning. Although medical attention was provided at the scene, he passed away shortly thereafter, as confirmed in a statement by the Irish police (Garda).

Hansard, who won an Oscar for Best Original Song and starred in the film 'The Commitments,' was a beloved figure in Ireland. He first gained recognition for his role as the guitarist in 'The Commitments' (1991), a film set in a working-class Dublin neighborhood about a group of young people forming a soul band. Even after achieving fame, Hansard continued his passion for busking, often performing with friends on Dublin's streets.

His international breakthrough came with the song 'Falling Slowly,' which he co-wrote with Czech musician Markéta Irglová. They performed as the duo Swell Season and starred in the film 'Once,' for which the song earned an Oscar in 2008. Hansard was married to Icelandic poet Maire Saaritsa, with whom he had a son, dividing his time between Kildare and Iceland.
