Irish police find bomb in car near Northern Ireland border, arrest two

Irish police are questioning two individuals in connection with a suspected crime against the state. The arrests followed the discovery of a bomb inside a vehicle stopped near the border with Northern Ireland.

Detectives stopped the car on Wednesday and requested assistance from the army's bomb disposal unit. The unit searched the vehicle, but the results were not immediately disclosed due to the ongoing investigation, police stated. However, RTE reported that the investigation confirmed a bomb was present and that the individuals were believed to be planning an attack in Northern Ireland.

The driver, a woman in her early 20s, and a man, approximately 40 years old, were taken into custody. The vehicle was stopped near Carrickmacross in County Monaghan, about 10 kilometers from the border with Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland occasionally experiences attacks by militant groups, often involving car bombs, despite a peace agreement that largely ended violence in the British territory nearly three decades ago.
