Iroegbu brothers fuel D’Tigers’ winning run at FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria's men's basketball team, D'Tigers, has made a strong opening to the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, securing three straight wins. This early success significantly bolsters their chances of qualifying for the 2027 tournament in Doha, Qatar.

Brothers Ikenna and Uchenna Iroegbu have emerged as standout players, consistently contributing to Nigeria's undefeated streak. In a closely contested 84-81 victory over Tunisia, Ikenna and Chimezie Metu led the scoring with 17 points each, while Uchenna added 13 points. Wes Iwundu also contributed 14 points in that game.

The siblings continued their impressive form in subsequent matches. They were instrumental in Nigeria's narrow 80-79 win against Guinea on Friday, July 3, and then helped secure a dominant 106-62 victory over Rwanda on Sunday, July 5, completing a perfect three-game run for the qualifying window.

Hailing from Abia State, the Iroegbu brothers have solidified their positions as vital members of the national team. Ikenna, who plays professionally for Openjobmetis Varese, provides crucial leadership from the backcourt, working in tandem with his younger brother, Uchenna.
