Is China building a bigger support ship for its future Type 004 carrier battle group?

China appears to be constructing one of its largest fast combat-support ships, likely intended to serve the future Type 004 aircraft carrier battle group. Commercial satellite imagery captured on July 2nd provides a glimpse into the vessel's layout at the Comec Longxue shipyard near Guangzhou. Defense analysts assess the new ship as a larger version of the People's Liberation Army Navy's existing Type 901 fast replenishment ship. Its design is believed to be tailored for supporting advanced carriers like the forthcoming Type 004 and their associated strike groups. Aircraft carriers require a broad spectrum of specialized supplies, including aviation fuel, precision-guided weapons, spare parts, and provisions for thousands of personnel. The expanded capacity of this new vessel would enable it to meet these extensive supply demands while simultaneously resupplying escorting destroyers. Measuring approximately 271 meters in length and 37 meters in beam, the ship is set to become one of the world's largest replenishment vessels upon completion.
