However, on two critical issues, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Middle East's vital waterways, the two superpowers theoretically share a profound common interest.

For China, the stakes are particularly high. A nuclear-armed Iran could empower radical Islamist movements across Asia, posing an existential threat to domestic stability, especially in sensitive regions like Xinjiang. Beijing views this as a direct challenge to its efforts to maintain tight control over its Muslim minority populations. Furthermore, China's global economic ambitions, heavily reliant on uninterrupted trade routes from East Asia through the Indian Ocean to Europe, are directly threatened by any Iranian ability to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Such disruptions could severely undermine the Belt and Road Initiative and jeopardize the supply chains essential to China's export-driven economy.

Given these shared interests, one might have expected the recent Trump-Xi summit in Beijing to yield a strong joint declaration affirming a common stance against Iranian nuclearization and for maritime security. Yet, this did not materialize. While US President Donald Trump made assertive public statements regarding Iran, Chinese President Xi Jinping remained publicly non-committal.

This public silence, however, does not necessarily reflect the entirety of the discussions. Diplomacy often involves behind-the-scenes maneuvering, and it remains unclear what was discussed privately between the leaders.
