Israel Kills Young Palestinian Near Separation Barrier with Occupied West Bank

Israeli forces killed a 26-year-old Palestinian man in Al Ram, a town situated near the separation barrier between the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced Sunday.

The victim, identified as Imad Haroun Mahmoud Ishtayeh, sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the thigh from live ammunition. He was subsequently transported to the Ramallah Medical Complex in the administrative capital of the West Bank, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Earlier on Sunday, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported another injury in Tulkarem, in the northern West Bank. Israeli forces opened fire on a vehicle, hitting a man in the lower back with a bullet.

These incidents occur against a backdrop of increased Israeli security measures and Palestinian attempts to cross into Israel. Since the start of the Gaza war following Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel has revoked the work permits of approximately 180,000 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank who previously worked in Israel, primarily in sectors like construction and cleaning. This revocation has pushed many workers to attempt irregular crossings of the separation barrier, often relying on networks that guide them through less heavily guarded points.

The separation barrier has become a site of frequent casualties, with Israeli forces regularly opening fire on individuals attempting to cross. A Palestinian was killed at the barrier on May 12 while attempting to cross, marking the latest reported fatality before Sunday's incident. The Palestinian organization Commission for Resistance Against the Wall and Settlements reported that Israeli troops and settlers carried out 1,637 attacks in the West Bank during April alone.
