Israel, Nigeria strengthen research, technology collaboration

Nigeria and Israel have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in research, technology, and innovation. This renewed pledge aims to foster entrepreneurship, facilitate the commercialization of research, and accelerate economic development through expanded partnerships.

The commitment was solidified at the closing ceremony and innovation showcase of the I-FAIR Cohort (Israel-Nigeria Innovation Fellowship for Aspiring Inventors and Researchers) in Abuja. The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, announced that funding has been secured for the fifth edition of the I-FAIR program, scheduled to commence in October 2026.

Ambassador Freeman highlighted I-FAIR as a tangible demonstration of the growing partnership between the two countries. He emphasized that the program empowers Nigerian innovators to develop local solutions for national challenges, supported by Israeli mentorship and expertise. "This program has never been about bringing Israeli solutions to Nigeria," Freeman stated. "It’s been about helping brilliant Nigerian innovators develop Nigerian solutions to Nigerian challenges supported by Israeli experience, mentorship and innovation."

The initiative has successfully convened government, academia, investors, engineers, and entrepreneurs, focusing on transforming innovative ideas into viable businesses that can create jobs and stimulate economic growth. Freeman expressed confidence that the robust relationship, which has seen significant growth over the past four and a half years in areas like innovation, agriculture, healthcare, education, water management, and technology, will unlock even greater opportunities for startups, research institutions, and businesses.

"Israel brings experience and innovation, technology, agriculture, healthcare, cyber security, security and water management," Freeman noted. "Nigeria brings extraordinary talent, creativity, entrepreneurship and one of the most dynamic young populations anywhere in the world." He concluded, "I have no doubt that the best chapters of the relationship between Israel and Nigeria are still ahead of us."

Architect Sonny Echono, Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), also reiterated TETFund's dedication to bolstering research and innovation through strategic alliances with Israel and other stakeholders. He confirmed that the I-FAIR program aligns with Nigeria's key priorities, including food security, agriculture, medicine, technology, clean energy, and the circular economy, and assured continued support for initiatives promoting research commercialization.
