Israeli air attacks on Lebanon kill at least four

Israeli air attacks killed at least four people and wounded 20 others in southern Lebanon on Sunday, in the latest escalation despite a truce. Two women died in an attack on Arab Salim, while two other people were killed in a strike on Nabatieh al-Fawqa, according to Lebanon’s official National News Agency and Health Ministry.

The attacks began at dawn and struck Nabatieh, Arab Salim, Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Reman. In Arab Salim, six people were wounded after Israeli forces issued a forced displacement order for a building, NNA reported. An air strike on Nabatieh city destroyed a historical building owned by the brother of a Lebanese member of parliament and damaged nearby buildings.

In Kfar Reman, an attack destroyed the home of the town’s late former mayor. Five people treated in hospitals in Nabatieh were later discharged. Another strike hit the Sayyida Masouma Garden, destroying what remained of the municipal park after an attack the previous day.

Israel said it launched the strikes in response to Hezbollah sending two drones toward its forces in southern Lebanon, calling the action a “blatant violation.” Since March, when Hezbollah attacked Israel during the US-Israel war on Iran, Israel has carried out air strikes across Lebanon and launched a ground invasion. Lebanon says those attacks have killed more than 4,300 people.

Israeli forces continue to operate inside a self-declared security zone about 10 kilometres inside Lebanon. Although attacks decreased after a US-Iran memorandum of understanding in June and a later framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon, Beirut continues to report strikes, artillery fire and widespread demolitions. Israel is also considering moving its troops three to four kilometres closer to the border, Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported, citing security sources.
