Israeli army strikes Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli forces struck Hezbollah targets near Nabatieh in southern Lebanon overnight, saying the operation followed the launch of two explosive drones toward Israeli soldiers near the Ali Taher mountain range.

The Israeli military said its forces brought down one of the drones and that no injuries were reported. In a statement, it described the targets as Hezbollah infrastructure used by fighters to “plan and direct attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.”

Israel's air-defense system also intercepted what the army called a “suspicious aerial target” over the Kfar Yuval area in the country's north. The military later said the incident had been a false alarm.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon warned last week that the situation in southern Lebanon “remains fragile.” It recorded 1,030 projectile trajectories between Aug. 21 and 27, an average of 147 per day, and reported damage to homes and infrastructure. The mission urged Israel and Lebanon to comply with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 to reduce tensions and restore stability.

U.S.-mediated contacts between Beirut and Jerusalem remain stalled. Hezbollah is not taking part in the negotiations and rejects dialogue with Israel, while the Israeli government demands the group's disarmament as a main condition for a lasting agreement.
