Israeli military reports rare West Bank airstrike

The Israeli military reported conducting a rare airstrike in the northern occupied West Bank, targeting "several terrorists" in the Jenin area. This marks an unusual military action for the West Bank, a semi-autonomous Palestinian territory that has largely been spared the extensive airstrikes experienced in Gaza following the October 7th Hamas attacks. The military stated that more detailed information would be provided later. Tensions have been escalating in the West Bank, with an increase in violence from Israeli settlers. Earlier in 2025, the military launched a large-scale operation targeting refugee camps in the northern West Bank, aiming to confront Palestinian armed groups. Tanks were deployed in Jenin, known as a hub for militants, in February of that year. According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), nearly 40,000 people were displaced from the camps due to this operation. Since the October 7th attacks, Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank have killed at least 1,100 Palestinians, including militants, based on AFP calculations from Palestinian Authority data. Official Israeli figures indicate that at least 48 Israelis, both civilians and military personnel, have died in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations during the same period. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The Oslo Accords in the 1990s granted limited self-rule to the Palestinian Authority, whose ruling movement, Fatah, is a rival to Hamas.
