Israeli Settler Escapes Justice for Killing Palestinian, Investigation Finds

An Israeli settler, Yinon Levi, is accused of fatally shooting Palestinian Awdah Hathaleen on July 28, 2025, in the southern occupied West Bank. A new investigation by the Palestinian rights group Al-Haq concludes that Levi fired the bullet that killed Hathaleen, a father of three and a contributor to the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land."

Hathaleen was filming an armed settler raiding the village of Umm al-Khair when he was shot. Al-Haq's investigation, released on the first anniversary of Hathaleen's death, analyzed videos, photographs, legal testimony, and open-source data. The report found that Levi's claim of self-defense was unsubstantiated, as Hathaleen posed no threat and no Palestinians at the scene were armed.

The investigation detailed that Levi was involved in land-leveling work for a new settlement outpost. Tensions had escalated earlier when another settler's excavator struck Hathaleen's cousin. Witnesses reported Levi striking several residents before firing his weapon. Despite this, Levi was not arrested at the scene and was later filmed with Israeli forces pointing out Palestinians and activists.

An Israeli court released Levi under house arrest for three days following international outcry, a move Al-Haq described as "operational alignment with the settlers' actions." The report highlights the disparity between Levi's actions and the minimal consequences he faced, suggesting a pattern of impunity.
