Countering Fidan's remarks, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar accused Turkey of hypocrisy, stating Ankara has spent decades "violating the sovereignty of Syria while cynically lecturing others on international law." Sa'ar pointed to Turkey's occupation of 5% of Syrian territory, its military campaigns against Kurdish forces, and its long-standing occupation of Cyprus. He contrasted this with Israel's "one-tenth of one percent of Syrian territory" buffer zone, which he described as a measure to protect against terror attacks.
