Istanbul adds 550 new buses and metrobuses to public transport fleet

Istanbul is set to significantly upgrade its public transportation system with the addition of 550 new vehicles to the İETT fleet. This major investment, part of ongoing transportation initiatives by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and İETT, will introduce a range of modern, domestically produced buses and metrobuses.

The new 550-vehicle fleet, for which the signing ceremony has been completed, will start serving gradually from October 2026.

The new fleet comprises 400 buses and 100 metrobuses, with 50 of the buses being fully electric. The vehicles will be phased into service starting in October 2026. The bus contingent includes 250 12-meter diesel buses with a 100-passenger capacity and 150 8-meter diesel buses designed for 60 passengers. The metrobus component features 100 25-meter articulated, double-jointed vehicles capable of carrying 280 passengers, while the 50 electric buses will be 12 meters long and accommodate 75 passengers.

These new vehicles are equipped with advanced safety and comfort features, reflecting a total investment of 15 billion Turkish Lira. Passengers can expect technologies such as digital driver displays, electronic parking brakes, isolated driver cabins, fatigue and attention warning systems for drivers, passenger detection systems, blind-spot detection, lane-keeping assist, 360-degree camera systems, telemetric data recorders, smart speed assistants, tire pressure monitoring, and automatic headlights. For passenger convenience, the buses will include high-definition digital information systems, public announcement systems, and numerous high-speed charging ports.

Vehicles brought to the city with a total budget of 15 billion Lira will hit the road with state-of-the-art active safety and comfort equipment.

İETT, recognized as Turkey's largest and the world's second-largest public transportation authority, currently serves 5 million passengers daily across 67,000 routes, covering 1.4 million kilometers. Since 2019, the authority has expanded its daily services by 26% and its fleet by 23%, demonstrating a continuous commitment to improving urban mobility.
