Istanbul to host 2027 Spanish Super Cup featuring Barca, Madrid

Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium will be the stage for the 2027 Spanish Super Cup, bringing four of Spain's top football clubs to Türkiye for a six-day tournament in February.

The Spanish Football Federation announced that Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid will compete in the four-team format from Feb. 2-7, 2027. Real Sociedad faces Real Madrid in one semifinal, while defending champions Barcelona meet Atletico Madrid in the other. The move to Istanbul represents a shift from recent years, when the competition was held in Saudi Arabia.

This temporary relocation is due to a scheduling conflict with Saudi Arabia hosting the Asian Cup in January and February 2027. Istanbul was selected after the Spanish federation evaluated several bids, reportedly including locations like Miami and Qatar. This makes Istanbul only the third country outside Spain to host the Super Cup, following Morocco and Saudi Arabia. The competition is slated to return to Saudi Arabia in 2028.

The Atatürk Olympic Stadium, a prominent venue with a capacity of approximately 77,500, has previously hosted two Champions League finals. Its selection provides the Spanish Super Cup with a high-profile European setting. The tournament has operated as a four-team Final Four since the 2019-20 season, significantly boosting its international profile and broadcast reach to over 150 countries.

Barcelona enters the 2027 tournament as the defending champions, having defeated Real Madrid 3-2 in the 2026 final in Jeddah. A potential rematch between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the final on Turkish soil is a possibility, provided both teams win their respective semifinal matches. The Spanish federation emphasizes the Super Cup's growing international reach and its financial importance, with revenues supporting Spanish football at various levels.
