Istat: Over 12 Million Caregivers in Italy, Women More Engaged

Italy is home to over 12 million caregivers, individuals who provide unpaid assistance in various forms to family members, friends, cohabitants, or neighbors. This significant number was calculated by Istat, Italy's national institute of statistics, in a study on solidarity networks.

The study reveals a gender disparity in caregiving roles. Women provide this type of help more frequently than men, with 21.7% of women reporting caregiving duties compared to 17.0% of men. These responsibilities can include providing companionship, accompanying individuals, offering healthcare assistance, supporting adults, managing bureaucratic tasks, helping with household chores, or preparing meals.

Among the 12 million caregivers, 4.4 million are classified as family caregivers who live with the person they are assisting. This highlights the substantial role informal care plays within Italian households and communities.
