Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly condemned a protest that occurred during the commemoration of the Marcinelle mining disaster, calling it a "shameful gesture."

Meloni, who is also a member of the Fratelli d'Italia party, stated on social media that the political protest escalated into an act of "contempt towards state institutions." She emphasized that the Marcinelle site, a place of remembrance for a tragic mining accident that claimed the lives of 270 miners in 1956, should not be a venue for political discord.

"Marcinelle is not the place for political division," Meloni asserted. "It is a place of memory, respect, and dignity of labor. Those who chose to turn their backs today have shown no respect for all of that."
