Italian premium compact SUV goes electric: Alfa Romeo Junior debuts

Alfa Romeo's return to Taiwan is bolstered by the introduction of the new Junior urban SUV, positioned as an entry-level model designed to appeal to a wider audience. Following the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, the Junior aims to blend premium aesthetics, practicality, and driving enjoyment.

The Junior is available in Taiwan with both hybrid (Ibrida) and pure electric (Elettrica) powertrains. The featured Elettrica 280 Veloce model boasts a compact exterior measuring 4,173mm long, 1,781mm wide, and 1,505mm tall, with a 2,562mm wheelbase. Its lower profile compared to the hybrid version enhances aerodynamics and handling, contributing to a more dynamic stance.

Design highlights include Alfa Romeo's signature shield grille with a unique镂空蛇紋 (hollowed snake pattern) for the electric version, contrasting gloss black accents on the mirrors and roof, and 20-inch alloy wheels. The short Coda Tronca rear, a nod to the classic Giulia TZ, further emphasizes its sporty character.

Inside, the driver-centric cockpit features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The top-spec Veloce model includes Sabelt Corsa suede racing seats with heating and electric adjustment for the driver, along with sport pedals and ambient lighting, creating a performance-oriented atmosphere. While rear passenger space is somewhat limited due to the compact dimensions, the cargo area offers 400 liters, expandable to 1,265 liters with the rear seats folded, and includes a hands-free electric tailgate.

Performance-wise, the Junior Elettrica 280 Veloce delivers 280 horsepower and 35 kgm of torque from its front-wheel-drive setup, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds. Its 54kWh battery provides a range of up to 354 kilometers, sufficient for daily commuting. The driving experience is characterized by strong acceleration, a firm sport suspension, and precise steering, enhanced by a Torsen mechanical limited-slip front differential and a lowered ride height. This setup allows the Junior to handle corners with agility, feeling more like a hot hatch than an SUV. The vehicle also comes equipped with a high-performance braking system and Alfa DNA driving modes (Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficiency), along with Level 2 ADAS features for safety and convenience.
