Italy appoints Ranieri and Mancini to lead new football project

Italy's football federation has unveiled a new leadership structure, appointing Claudio Ranieri as director of national teams and Roberto Mancini as head coach. This move follows the departures of Leonardo and Paolo Maldini, and the federation's decision not to hire Andrea Pirlo.

Speaking at a press conference alongside federation president Giovanni Malagò, both Ranieri and Mancini expressed their commitment to working together to guide Italy back to the World Cup stage. Ranieri highlighted his objective to "ensure that children have the opportunity to see Italy play in a World Cup," a sentiment underscored by the nation's absence from the last three tournaments in 2018, 2022, and 2026.

Mancini, who is returning to his position after a previous tenure, stressed the importance of assembling a strong and competitive squad. He recalled Italy's formidable reputation in past World Cups and outlined his goals for the upcoming cycle, which include performing well in the Nations League, qualifying for the European Championship, and ultimately, securing a World Cup spot. Mancini signed a four-year contract, expressing his hope to win trophies and extend his stay.

Both new appointees emphasized a return to fundamental Italian football principles. Mancini noted that the playing style must align with the players' characteristics and advocated for a unified philosophy across all youth levels, from U-18 to U-21. Ranieri echoed this, stressing the need to develop individual technical skills, including first touch, one-on-one ability, and dribbling. Mancini views this new role as the "achievement that crowns my career," acknowledging the significant challenges ahead but drawing confidence from his past experiences with difficult tasks. He also aims to reignite the passion Italians have for their national team.
