Italy: Decision on Delmastro's chat logs postponed amid controversy

A decision regarding the access of Andrea Delmastro's chat logs by a Chamber of Deputies regulation committee has been postponed, igniting a political firestorm. The committee, tasked with deciding whether to grant access to the prosecutor's requested chat data, held a vote that resulted in a 7-6 victory for the majority. However, the process was marred by controversy as Antonio D'Alessio, an exponent of the Azione party, left the meeting before the final vote, leaving the outcome in the hands of the majority.

Devis Dori, president of the committee, criticized the decision to defer the vote on accessing documents to a majority-only vote. He argued that this undermines the committee's role as a guarantor body. The Five Star Movement (M5s) also voiced strong opposition, labeling the situation a "very dangerous precedent" that allows the ruling majority to arbitrarily decide who can access documentation.

The situation remains uncertain regarding the full parliamentary session. While some members of the center-right coalition, particularly from Brothers of Italy (FdI), are pushing for a vote this Thursday, others prefer to delay the decision until September, citing potential numerical risks before the summer recess. This internal division within the majority could complicate the parliamentary process, adding to the potential pitfalls of a secret ballot.

In protest, M5s members brought a symbolic small safe into the chamber and displayed banners reading "Out with the chats!" and "Open the safe!" Party leader Riccardo Ricciardi questioned the majority's motives, asking what the chats contained and accusing them of trying to cover up Delmastro's communications with a man convicted of acting as a front for a Camorra clan. The Democratic Party (PD) and Avs (Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra) also criticized the decision, linking it to a potential sacrifice of the fight against the mafia for political expediency.
