Italy mourns woman killed by ex-partner; calls for political action

The small Italian town of Camponogara, near Venice, bid a tearful farewell to Tania Terrin, 39, who was killed by her ex-partner on August 15. Her ex-partner subsequently took his own life. Hundreds of mourners filled the church for the funeral, with many expressing deep sorrow and shock.

During the service, parish priest Don Alberto Peron emphasized the need for collective responsibility, particularly from politicians, to address gender-based violence. He criticized the diversion of funds towards defense and armaments instead of supporting anti-violence associations. "We demand greater attention from the justice system," he stated, calling for effective application of laws rather than just repressive measures. He stressed the importance of building a network of positive relationships to counter isolation and abuse.

A neighbor spoke on behalf of the residents, recalling how Terrin had bravely sought their help in the spring. She had shared photos of her ex-partner, Dino Keber, in their building's chat group, asking for assistance in preventing him from entering. The neighbor expressed deep regret, saying, "All that remains for us is remorse for not having been able to alleviate your suffering, to protect you." The neighbor also extended condolences to Terrin's mother, who had hoped until the end that her daughter would open the door that fateful night.

Terrin had previously reported Keber to the authorities in April after he attempted to strangle her. She was hospitalized but released with a two-day prognosis. Keber had faced previous accusations from three other women dating back to 2002. The regional government of Veneto declared a day of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast across the region. The tragedy has reignited calls for stronger measures and greater political will to prevent such violence.
