Italy's Football Federation Faces Coaching Vacuum Amidst World Cup Woes

Italy's national football team is navigating one of the darkest periods in its history, marked by three consecutive failures to qualify for the World Cup. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is now in a race against time to appoint a new head coach, with less than two months remaining before the team's next Nations League fixtures.

Since Gennaro Gattuso's departure in early April following a playoff loss, the FIGC has been without a permanent manager. The situation is compounded by a significant restructuring within the federation, including the appointments of Giovanni Malagò as president and Paolo Maldini as technical director. Maldini's primary task is to recruit a top-tier coach capable of restoring Italy's standing in international football.

Initially, the FIGC targeted renowned managers such as Pep Guardiola. However, the Manchester City manager reportedly declined the offer, citing a need for personal rest after a demanding decade. Similarly, Carlo Ancelotti, despite recently extending his contract with Brazil until 2030, was also considered but did not accept the role.

The search continues, with other potential candidates including Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Mancini, and Antonio Conte. The pressure is immense to find a coach who can reverse Italy's fortunes after their World Cup disappointments.
