Italy Slams NATO Chief's Comments on Iran War Flights

Australia's domestic spy agency has revealed that an Australian citizen living in Iran orchestrated a significant antisemitic firebomb attack in Sydney, according to the director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO), Mike Burgess. In his annual threat assessment, Burgess detailed how an Iran-based Australian citizen, identified as a senior agent of the IRGC Quds Force, directed the 2024 firebombing of a Bondi restaurant. He also noted another major firebomb attack on a Melbourne synagogue was directed by a former Australian resident working for Iran. Burgess expressed concern that an Iranian group active in Europe could carry out further attacks or assassinations on Australian soil. He highlighted that Iran continues to view Australia as a target, potentially inspiring acts of arson, vandalism, or assassinations. The ASIO chief defended the agency's resource allocation amid "concurrent, cascading, and compounding threats." He revealed that counter-terrorism officers have doubled between 2005 and 2025, and the agency is employing new tools like artificial intelligence. ASIO has thwarted 31 major terrorism plots since 2014, with cases becoming more complex due to online radicalization. Furthermore, Burgess warned of state hackers penetrating critical infrastructure and a nation attempting to coerce eight individuals, including five Australians, into returning to their birthplaces to silence them. Foreign spies are also actively seeking to recruit Australians to reveal official secrets related to the AUKUS security partnership.
