Itauguá Hospital: Staff 'forced to manage human misery' amid severe shortages

A healthcare worker at Itauguá National Hospital has voiced strong criticism over the dire conditions and lack of essential resources, stating that staff are "forced to manage human misery." Adine Peralta, who has worked in the Adult Emergency department for over 16 years, shared her frustrations in a public message, highlighting the daily struggles faced by medical personnel. Her complaints echo those of other hospital staff who have recently used social media to expose the precarious situation. Peralta directly challenged the hospital's General Directorate, contrasting their public "Plan for Quality Hospital Management and Patient Safety" with the harsh reality on the ground. "Papers can hold anything, but the hallways cannot," she stated, emphasizing the disconnect between official plans and the daily operational challenges. The lack of basic supplies is a major concern. Peralta reported that the hospital has been without even basic adhesive tape (leucoplast) for some time. Furthermore, there are difficulties in obtaining sufficient equipment for monitoring blood pressure and thermometers. Staff are reportedly forced to purchase some essential items out-of-pocket to perform their duties. The situation has led to undignified treatment of patients, with Peralta describing how elderly and severely ill individuals are being attended to in crowded hallways, lacking any privacy. "We undress and clean grandparents and seriously ill patients in the middle of the hallway, in full view of everyone," she lamented, underscoring the humanitarian crisis unfolding within the facility.
