Itauguá Municipal Market reconstruction begins with initial works

The reconstruction of Itauguá's Municipal Market has commenced with initial stages of surveying, marking, and excavation for foundations. The project, valued at G8.09 billion, aims to replace the building tragically lost to fire on May 10. The new market's design will closely emulate the original structure.

Architect Clara Quintana, Director of Works for the Municipality of Itauguá, confirmed that surveying, marking, and foundation excavation are underway. The perimeter fencing and on-site worker facilities are also in place. The market will feature a mixed structure, incorporating concrete pillars, a metal roof, and enclosure walls. Soil study results and structural calculations have guided this initial phase, with ongoing technical adjustments to the executive project to ensure the safety of the large-span, high-ceiling building.

Municipal authorities and market representatives recently participated in a groundbreaking ceremony. The construction contract was awarded to Constructora FENAR, with a seven-month execution period and multi-year payment plan. The original building was almost entirely destroyed by the May 10 fire, leaving over 450 vendors without their workplaces.

Currently, the vendors are operating from temporary tents erected with support from the Central Governorate and the Municipality of Itauguá. The Governorate will also fund the new market's equipment. The reconstruction is a significant undertaking for the community, aiming to restore a vital hub for local commerce.

The project executive still undergoes some technical adjustments, due to the magnitude of the construction. All modifications are made based on structural calculations to guarantee the safety of a building with large roof surfaces and great height.
