ITB expert says Indonesia can reach 2027 oil target, with community wells as one source of growth

Indonesia’s proposed 2027 oil-lifting target of 612,500 barrels per day is realistic, according to Bonar Tua Halomoan Marbun, a professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering.

“Asked whether raising oil lifting to around 612,000 barrels per day is reasonable, the answer is yes, it makes sense,” Bonar said in a telephone interview on Thursday. The government has proposed increasing the 2027 oil target from 610,000 barrels per day in 2026. The gas-lifting target would move in the opposite direction, falling from 984,000 to 954,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Bonar said the government’s program to organize and optimize community oil wells could help support higher production. Parliamentary Commission XII Chairman Bambang Patijaya has estimated that output from those wells could rise to about 30,000 barrels per day if a program launched in 2026 is optimized in 2027. Active community wells currently produce about 2,000 barrels per day, according to Bonar.

“Asked whether this program is good, of course it is good in a generally positive sense,” Bonar said. He added that mature, or brownfield, oil fields could also provide additional output if operators apply suitable technology, governance and production practices. The strategy also includes enhanced oil recovery, workovers on older wells and efforts to resolve operational problems in several production areas, including Pertamina Hulu Rokan.
