Iyabo Obasanjo rejoins PDP, gets Ogun central senate ticket

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially returned to her former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move follows her resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) the previous week. At a large gathering at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, the state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Abayomi Tella, presented Obasanjo with the party's flag, announcing her as the senatorial candidate for Ogun Central for the upcoming 2027 elections. The event was preceded by a procession through Abeokuta's main streets, with Obasanjo accompanied by the PDP's governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, supporters, and party members. Dr. Tella formally presented the flag, stating, "On behalf of our National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, and the entire National Working Committee of the PDP, I, Abayomi Tella, PhD, the State Chairman of the PDP, and on behalf of PDP Ogun Central, present to our revered sister, Prof. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, this flag as the authority of the party for her candidature for the Senate in Ogun Central."

Upon taking the party's oath, Senator Obasanjo pledged her loyalty and allegiance to the PDP, its constitution, manifesto, and code of conduct. "I commit myself to the ideals of the PDP. I shall serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility and dedication, prioritising their welfare above personal and sectional interests," she declared. The former commissioner elaborated on her reasons for leaving the APC, citing disrespect, betrayal, and unfair treatment from the party's leadership. The 59-year-old Obasanjo expressed feeling treated like a child by the APC, which prompted her decision to return to the PDP. She had initially joined the APC due to the respect and regard President Bola Tinubu showed her, treating her like a daughter.
