Izmir honors Sancar Maruflu with Konak ceremony on fifth anniversary of his death

Izmir, Turkey – A ceremony marked the fifth anniversary of the passing of Sancar Maruflu, a beloved figure in Izmir known affectionately as "Izmir Baba." Held at the Sancar Maruflu Science Center in Konak, the event commemorated Maruflu's life and contributions.

The commemoration was a joint effort by the Konak Municipality, the Izmir Journalists Association (İGC), and the Izmir Provincial Association for the Aid of the Poor (İZFAK). Attendees included Konak Mayor Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu, Maruflu's son Cevat Ziya Maruflu, İGC President Dilek Gappi, and various community members and supporters.

Mayor Mutlu spoke of Maruflu as a symbol of loyalty and solidarity, recalling their shared efforts to protect Izmir's Kültürpark. "He was a guide to us with his experiences, memories, and knowledge," Mutlu said. "It is rare to find such a loyal citizen who cared so much for this city's people, trees, and birds. For me, Sancar Maruflu meant loyalty, solidarity. And we must keep alive the loyalty, solidarity, and memory that Sancar Maruflu symbolized. Because his most important legacy was not to forget."
