J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage outlines events for 14th anniversary

The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage has announced a series of events to mark the 14th anniversary of the death of former Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills. The commemoration aims to honor the late president's legacy and bring together various stakeholders to reflect on his contributions.

The planned activities commence with a commemorative lecture scheduled for Wednesday at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). The lecture will be delivered by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, with Ms. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh, a former Minister for Foreign Affairs, serving as chairperson. This lecture is expected to delve into aspects of Mills's presidency and his impact on Ghana.

Following the lecture, a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Asomdwee Park, near Osu Castle. This solemn occasion will be attended by prominent figures, including President John Dramani Mahama, members of the Legislature, the late President's family, representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

We’ve former NPP and NDC members as well as foreigners who have delivered lectures at the previous lectures organised. So, we have not followed any format in terms of the politics.

The commemoration will culminate on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with the President John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Theodosia Okoh National Hockey Pitch. This sporting event aims to foster camaraderie and celebrate the former president's life through a popular sport.

Addressing the press, Mr. Alex Segbefia, Chairperson of the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, emphasized that the selection of speakers for the annual lecture is not influenced by partisan politics. He stated that individuals chosen are those who knew President Mills well and interacted with him, ensuring a comprehensive portrayal of his character. Segbefia highlighted that past lectures have featured speakers from different political backgrounds, including members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and international figures, reflecting Mills's role as a unifying figure.

President Mills, or whoever has been spoken about, was a father for all, and so it has been our desire to ensure that we mix the match. Sometimes the chairperson is from a different political fraternity from the lecturer. But by the time the lectures are over, there is always a common thread which runs through, regardless of who is giving the lecture, and that is you get the complete character of the man who was called J.E.A. Mills.
