Jæger writes Norwegian history with 400m European Championship gold

Henriette Jæger has made Norwegian athletics history by becoming the first Norwegian woman to secure an individual medal in a sprint event at a senior outdoor championship. The 23-year-old achieved this milestone by winning the 400-meter final at the European Championships in Birmingham.

Jæger crossed the finish line in a remarkable 49.04 seconds, not only winning the gold medal but also setting a new Norwegian record. This performance was a dominant one, as she finished a full second ahead of the silver medalist, Natalia Bukowiecka. The Norwegian commentator Jann Post exclaimed during the broadcast, "She's smashing them! She's flying past them! She's smashing the rest of Europe!"

This victory adds to Jæger's already impressive season. She had previously anchored the Norwegian mixed 4x400m relay team to a gold medal at the same championships. Jæger entered the 400m final as the favorite, holding the best time in Europe this season (49.15 seconds).

Jæger's success is the culmination of years of development. She has established herself among the world's elite in the 400 meters, reaching the Olympic final in Paris in 2024 and the World Championship final in Tokyo the following year. She also secured a World Championship bronze and European Championship silver indoors in 2025, before becoming the U23 European champion in Bergen.
